This week the BBC reported that the Care Quality Commission had safety concerns over Western General Hospital’s A&E department following its investigation in September. The main criticism was over staff shortages and the support for the existing staff; a problem first warned about in April 2019.

An Observer analysis published on 8th September 2019 demonstrated that 70% of Hospital Trusts are failing to meet safety standards, putting patients put at risk.
Further, reports published by the Care Quality Commission regulator from June 2019 onwards show that that staff shortages are increasingly leading to safety concerns.
It has been reported that Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, in London, “did not always have enough staff with the right qualifications, skills, training and experience to keep people safe from avoidable harm and abuse and to provide the right care and treatment”.
Inspectors of Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital Trust saw “low staffing levels directly impact on patients’ safe care and treatment” after being rated inadequate for safety last year.
In response to the Observer’s findings, Rob Harwood, Chair of the Consultants Committee at the British Medical Association said: “With the NHS chronically underfunded and understaffed for many years, those working there are increasingly expected to deliver care in an unsafe, unsupportive environment, putting the safety of our patients at risk”.
