back of woman with illustrated spondyloarthritis

Brave Talia Dean has recently told her story of how her back pain was misdiagnosed for 15 years and has left her unable to dance and unlikely to be able to walk unaided by the age of 40; an outcome which she feels was entirely avoidable.

Talia has since been diagnosed with axial spondyloarthritis (axial SpA) which is a type of inflammatory arthritis of the spine and pelvis, predominantly but not exclusively seen in men. Despite multiple attendances to a number of medical professionals with back pain over 15 years, the condition was not diagnosed until she became unable to lift her young son out of the bath and further investigations were undertaken.

Sadly the condition has already caused permanent damage to Talia’s spine, fusing her vertebrae together and limiting her mobility.

At Graystons we understand just how devastating a delay in diagnosis a medical condition can be. If you feel that you have suffered from a delay in diagnosis of your medical condition, please get in touch with one of our team who will be happy to discuss this with you further.
