Cauda Equina Claims

We are medical negligence solicitors ready to help with Cauda Equina compensation.

Cauda equina syndrome is rare but can result in life-changing and permanent injuries. It occurs when the nerves at the base of the spinal cord are compressed. The nerves of the cauda equina are responsible for the supply of nerves to the bladder, bowels, lower limbs and sensation to the ‘saddle’ area.

There can be several causes of cauda equina syndrome, including trauma to the spine, an infection in the spinal canal, a tumour or a narrowing of the spinal canal. However, cauda equina syndrome is most often caused by a herniated disc in the lower spine (lumbar), causing compression of the nerves at the bottom of the spinal cord.

What are the symptoms?

The ‘red flag’ symptoms that could potentially indicate cauda equina syndrome are:

  • Severe lower back pain

  • Loss or altered sensation in the legs, buttocks, saddle region, backs of legs, or feet.

  • Loss of bladder and or bowel function

  • Sudden onset of sexual dysfunction

If the ‘red flag’ symptoms are ignored or misdiagnosed, the neurological effects can be devastating and permanent. Decompression surgery to relieve the pressure on the nerve needs to happen as soon as possible to avoid any further injury. If diagnosed and treated early, the symptoms of cauda equina can resolve, and patients can have a good prognosis. This is dependent upon the degree of compression and damage to the nerves. The longer the nerves are left compressed, the more damage is likely to have been caused. Therefore, the greater the delay in diagnosing and treating cauda equina syndrome, the worse the outcome is expected. If cauda equina syndrome is suspected, emergency admission to the hospital is critical.

When medical professionals fail to diagnose or delay in diagnosing cauda equina syndrome, it can leave a patient with permanent life-changing injuries. If you believe you have suffered due to delayed diagnosis or negligently treated cauda equina syndrome, you may be eligible to claim compensation.
